Industrial Directive to All Nurses at RW1 RHKG

It is not acceptable to MUMN to have an ineffective  management who plays down serious offenses on the nurses and then tries to intimidate staff so not to contact their union. If this is the “famous” management by Steward Health Care then it shows the standards are far well below the par of the Government hospitals as regards to management procedures.

MUMN is referring the continuous  harassment of a known patient in RW1 who scope on the ward is to swear at the nurses, intimidate the nurses, resists all nurses’ commands, threaten the nurses that he has sufficient information as to make them lose their jobs, threaten nurses that his relatives will “seek” the nurses outside, that he will always have this way, manipulates other patients against the nurses, etc etc.

Such harassment has been going for two years and you as the CEO did absolutely nothing about it.

Dr. Zammit knew well what is going on inside RW1 and did nothing. In fact way back in July 2020, Dr. Zammit himself, was shouted, sweared at and threatened by the patient in the main ward corridor in front of all the nurses and patients present. Dr. Zammit instead of taking action on the removal of such patient, made the patient more powerful and arrogant by providing Stewards’ lawyer to accommodate the patient. No wonder that patient boasts of having it always “his way”.

Having the nurses in RW1 suffering from such harassment for two years while KGH ignoring the plea of the nurses shows that KGH hospital management failed miserable to protect its nurses. For Dr. Zammit the only “solution” was just to offer physiological support, leaving the patient having a field day on our nurses.

To this very day, Dr. Zammit has no clue how to deal with such situations since he requested the staff “what he can do”.

This is a health and safety issue and the nurses ONLY approached the union when seeing that for two years KGH management failed drastically to address such serous harassment. MUMN cannot allow this abusive behaviour towards its members.

MUMN is therefore allowing 48 hours for KGH management to remove such patient outside the hospital.

Failure to do so, next Friday 14th May 2021 from 7am onwards, a walk out from all the nurses (leaving only one nurse for CPR) from the ward and all nurses are to remain in the nursing administration office until such patient is removed from the ward. MUMN will not accept any compromise on Health and Safety of the staff.

Also another Directive is being issued due to the inability of Dr. Zammit to take proper action - patients who do not smoke have no right to request the staff to be taken to the smoking area. Even on such a small issue Dr. Zammit did not seek the ward’s interest.
