The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) would like to thank “our amazing midwifery teams who continue to reassure and care for mothers and babies, today and every day.”

The innovation, flexibility, resilience and caring nature of the Maltese midwives is acknowledged on the International Day of the Midwife on the 5th May.

“It is a day to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of midwives to maternal healthcare. Midwives around the world have still been working tirelessly during the pandemic,” a statement read.

The World Health Organisation has made 2020 the International Year of the Midwife and the Nurse. For the first time, countries across the world will unite in recognition of the essential role that midwives play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage.

“2020 has brought many unexpected challenges to our nation with the COVID-19 pandemic that is impacting on us all in so many ways. As a profession you have much to be proud of as you have continued to provide the best possible care to mothers and babies. The challenges have not only been professional but also personal and despite our own situations you have continued to put the needs of mothers and babies central to your actions,” the statement concluded.
